German Technical doctoral program at CERN (Wolfgang-Gentner fellowships)
Content and objectives of the program
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) promotes theses in technical fields at CERN for a period of up to three years (Wolfgang-Gentner fellowships). [1] The aim of the program is the training of students from German universities in an international, first class high-tech environment with close contacts to the industry. The Wolfgang Gentner program is part of the general CERN Doctoral student programs with the same employment conditions, but funding from the BMBF.conditions
- University degree with doctoral studies at the commencement at CERN
- EU nationality of the Member States of CERN ( Associate Member States and candidate for membership are Member States equivalent)
- (Future) doctoral studies at a German university
- Very good academic performance with suitability for promotion
- Good knowledge of English or French
application
Candidates apply directly at CERN for the general CERN Doctoral Student Programs. A separate application to the Wolfgang-Gentner program is not required. After Deadline All applicants will be considered with EU nationals in a preselection for the award of Wolfgang Gentner fellowships, study at a German university or intending to study there.Ultimately, all applications from CERN Technical and Doctoral Student Committee (TSC) will be evaluated, which makes the final decision on the selection of candidates.- Next application deadlines:
April 26, 2016 (selection committee on 7 June 2016 Earliest start date: August 1, 2016), Application Form
October 25, 2016 (Selection Committee: December 6, 2016 Earliest start date: February 1, 2017), Application Form
subjects
In the interest of a successful application, applicants should previously inform about possible themes and to contact the appropriate maintainers at CERN. In subjects catalog of CERN Doctoral Student Programs current issues are listed, which are the CERN work program constantly adapted. It is recommended, already when applying the desired topic with future supervisor at CERN and home university in Germany indicate with dortigem caregivers. However, application can also be done without having to enter specific topic or supervisor. The final selection and topic assignment due to the application profile is in any case through the Technical and Doctoral Student Committee (TSC).The main task of CERN is the provision and operation of large infrastructure to conduct basic research in physics at the highest energies and other border areas of current research. This requires a large number of engineering tasks and topics for promotion. Interested parties from engineering fields are so strong call to participate in the program.
generally excluded from the doctoral program are research physical problems of experimental or theoretical nuclear and particle physics.
employment
After successful selection candidates may begin no earlier than after 1-2 months at CERN. The PhD students are fully integrated during their stay at CERN in the relevant working group. The service is provided together in close coordination with CERN-site staff and by the professor of the home university, which acts as a first supervisor of the thesis. The progress of the promotion will be ensured and documented through regular reports. The participants of the doctoral program will receive a tax-free residence payment and other potential benefits such as family or child allowances in accordance with the performance of the CERN Doctoral Student Programs.
The Wolfgang Gentner program supports regular trips to the Ph.D. home university and national symposiums in Germany, as well as travel to and from the supervisor CERN.
