PhD: in Advanced light sheet imaging techniques
PhD Student position in Advanced light sheet imaging techniques for the in-vivo visualization of vertebrates (ITN, Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions)
ICFO (http://www.icfo.eu) is offering a PhD-fellowship to a highly motivated candidate who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in the field of Advanced imaging techniques: Multilevel Bioimaging, Analysis and Modelling of Vertebrate Development and Disease, and obtain a doctoral degree.
The successful candidate successful candidate will be part of the SLN research facility(https://www.icfo.eu/facilities), led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez.
This proposal sprang from European scientists in both academia and industry who identified a common challenge: setting up a training frame to educate the next generation of images in complex biological systems (healthy & pathological). The long-term goal is reaching cellular or sub-cellular resolution in complete vertebrate embryos.
The candidate will be trained by addressing the following scientific bottlenecks and challenges:
- Preparing vertebrate embryos (such as zebrafish) for optimal imaging ensuring normal development during long imaging periods
- Developing and implementing new and advanced novel multi-modal and multi-scale imaging instruments, based on Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM) and super-resolution. Emphasis will be placed.
- Analysing complex sets of big-data images to extract relevant information
- Using processed images to design computational and mathematical
This interdisciplinary training is based on an inter-sectoral organization with partners from academia and companies.
The full training programme is based on an optimal balance between training through research and many network-wide training events, including conferences with physical presence, digital conferences and monthly video-link events.

ICFO PhD degrees are offered in collaboration with the UPC - BarcelonaTech. Students at ICFO benefit from the extensive course offerings of local universities and focused instruction by ICFO professors while carrying out research activities at ICFO groups with local and international collaborators.
The position is part of an EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN), funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions of the European Commission.
As part of the ITN network, the successful candidate will have access to the various training activities organized by the network and to secondments at different partners.
The network includes: Universite de Montpellier (France), University of Leiden (Netherlands), University of Cambridge (UK), Centre National De La Recherche Scientifique (Gif-Sur-Yvette, France), TatraMed Software (Slovakia), Slovenska Technicka Univerzita Bratislave (Slovakia), Institut Pasteur, (France), The Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), Acquifer AG (Germany), Phaseview (France), amongst others.
